The FA was intended to be the American Locomotive Company's answer to Electro-Motive's ever popular freight units. The design was a road freight unit echoing Alco's passenger service PA model. The FA also replaced Alco's original DL series. However, Alco's new 244 engine had some problems which seriously hampered it from ever making a serious challenge to EMD's F series. Despite the diesel engine’s flaws of the FA model, and its variants, it would sell a little more than 1,000 units making them one of Alco's most successful lines.
